Kristin Herrel & Wil Hehman

Kristin and Wil were married on October 15, 2016 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.

When Kristin and Wil met at the Uptown Dallas bar post weekly mass, they didn’t know that they were embarking on an “amazing race” together. The altar wasn’t the finish line, but, merely, a checkpoint for the pair.

“He asked me out on our first date for a picnic in April 2013, and we’ve been together ever since,” said Kristin.

It was on the couch parked in front of the television where the couple found their favorite pastime: watching “The Amazing Race” on CBS and dreaming about traveling around the world together. Travel and adventure inspired the proposal and the wedding’s theme.

“For the proposal, Wil had clue cards and Amazing Race envelopes printed up that he distributed to all our friends,” said Kristin. “I went shopping with my girlfriends, and at lunch my friend Haley handed me an envelope.”

Kristin took a tour around Dallas visiting significant places to her and Wil’s relationship. Her first stop was at a local pub where many of their first dates were. At each location, she met friends who would greet her with another clue. Kristin finally found Wil waiting  at the same spot where they shared their first kiss.

“He proposed, I squealed yes, and then he handed me the last clue,” said Kristin.

The last clue was a planned engagement party waiting for the couple at their favorite restaurant, Meddlesome Moth, that night.

Along with all things romantic and sweet, the theme of Kristin and Wil’s wedding was vintage travel (Wil’s idea). Vintage travel was incorporated into their special day, including invitations handmade by the groom. Guests would use a luggage escort tag to find their seats at tables that were numbered with airport codes and the cake sat on two vintage suitcases.

“We love to travel and see the world together, so this was just perfect,” said Kristin.

Rita Miller Dorris at Rent my Dust helped pull the theme together with vintage suitcases, cameras, globes and trunks to make it extremely personal for Kristin and Wil. However, the most memorable part of the night was their private last dance. While all the guests waited outside to wish the couple farewell, for a song’s time it was just the two of them. While John Legend’s “All of Me” played softly, the couple danced around the empty room. The wedding night slowly drifted into a memory.

“It was such a sweet, quiet moment for the two of us together at the end of the evening,” said Kristin. “Having that last dance allowed us to take a moment to savor the remaining few minutes.”

Kristin and Wil are grateful to Sarah Kee from Keestone Events for suggesting the idea. In the end, the only thing that Kristin and Wil wished they had done differently was to have the band play more. A small change for an adventurous night.
