Shamika moved to Texas in August of 2011 to accept a new job. When she was offered the opportunity to relocate from Oklahoma, she jumped at the chance to be young, carefree, and explore a new city. However, her good friend and coworker Sharonea McGill had an idea: she wanted to set Shamika up with her cousin Davion. Shamika immediately put an end to this plan and didn’t feel that the time was right. (Back to that young, carefree, and exploring a new city stuff.) One day at work, Shamika noticed Sharonea’s Facebook page on her computer and saw a picture of Davion. She was immediately drawn to his “gorgeous eyes” and asked Sharonea who the cute boy was. She replied that he was her cousin who she was trying to set her up with! After she gave Sharonea the green light to give him her number, Davion messaged Shamika and asked her if it was okay to call her. They talked on the phone for hours at a time for a month and she finally gave into his pleas to go on a date with him. They dined at La Duni and after the first date she started to think he was “the one.” After their second date, she knew he would be her husband.
Davion put together a dinner to celebrate her graduation from MBA school. She was excited that all of her closest family and friends were coming in town, but she was a little reluctant about having a big dinner. A part of her wanted to celebrate her accomplishment with just her boyfriend, but he had other plans. They went on with the evening and dined with 50 of their closest family and friends. When they sat down, Davion whispered sweet words into Shamika’s ear and told her that he had a gift for her. A tad embarrassed to open the gift in front of all the people, she slowly opened the box. She looked up and everyone was capturing the moment on their phones and cameras. As she opened the jewelry box, she assumed it was a necklace she had been wanting, but instead it was a stack of papers. As she read through the funny notes, the last one read “Happy Everything.” As she turned around and started laughing, her groom was on bended knee. Her joy and laughter was replaced with tears, shock, and bliss. She said yes as the entire restaurant applauded.
Shamika attended the University of Oklahoma. She earned a degree in liberal studies. She attended Texas Woman’s University and earned an MBA. She works for Texas Health Resources and is attending the Trinity University for a masters of science in healthcare administration. She will graduate this summer. Davion served four years in the United States Air Force. He works for the Department of Veteran Affairs in Fort Worth. He is currently studying healthcare management at Dallas Baptist University. He will graduate in May of 2015. They will marry on May 25, 2015 at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church with a ceremony to follow at Hotel ZaZa.
