They say you know when you know. But in some cases, everyone else knows before you. When Kendall and Rusty met through a good old-fashioned set up, this is exactly what happened. Their first date was a double date with Kendall’s best friend Kylie and Rusty’s best friend Alan, who happened to be Kylie’s fiancé. The four went out for dinner and bowling when Kendall and Rusty realized their friends had spotted a true match. “The first thing I noticed about Rusty was how intentional he was throughout the night. Even though we were on a double date, he made a point to always be talking to me, looking me in the eye with genuine interest,” says Kendall. Knowing the first date could turn into something more serious, Rusty asked Kendall on a second date and 15 days later, the two made it official.
A year and a half later, Rusty knew what he wanted for the new year: Kendall as his wife. On January 2, Rusty told Kendall that he planned a date night for the two of them. Kendall thought nothing of this as he often planned fun dates. He also mentioned that his four-year-old nephews had opened up camping gear for Christmas and wanted to make s’mores that same night. Knowing how much Kendall loves his family, he knew this was how he could tie his plan together. After Kendall arrived at his place, Rusty drove Kendall to her favorite gazebo at Gore Park. Because it was raining that evening, Kendall thought this was odd. But after seeing his nephews running around in the rain, Kendall was still unaware of what was about to happen. She suddenly noticed that there were bouquets of flowers in the gazebo and began to piece things together. Rusty then led Kendall up the gazebo stairs and explained that each bouquet, arranged from smallest to largest, represented a different point in their relationship and how their love has grown. Each bouquet had a keepsake attached. The first was a love letter that Rusty wrote Kendall in the beginning of their relationship. The second was a ticket from their trip together to Washington DC. The third was from the hotel in Mexico, where Rusty asked Kendall’s parents for their blessing. The fourth and final bouquet stood waiting to represent the most important and heartfelt moment that they would have yet. Rusty then got on one knee and after a tearful “yes!” Kendall finally noticed that both of their families were there waiting to congratulate the couple. Kendall and Rusty went back with their families to Rusty’s parents house for champagne. The two, happier than ever, went on as a couple to enjoy their engagement and the date night that Rusty had intended.
Kendall attended Texas A&M and majored in accounting, while Rusty attended Louisiana State University and studied construction management. Kendall now works at KPMG in the audit practice and Rusty works at Hillwood Construction Services. Kendall and Rusty will hold their ceremony at Highland Park United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 5, 2015.
