Thanks to Jen O’Neal, owner of Halo Calligraphy, for answering this week’s Ask the Expert question focusing on monograms.

What is proper etiquette for a personal monogram on a wedding day?

A bride should never use her married monogram before her wedding reception. Many engaged couples choose a two-letter monogram, called a duogram, which is a combination of their first initials. It’s fun to carry a custom duogram like this throughout the engagement and wedding. It helps to keeps a consistent theme. Duograms can be used for save the dates, engagement party invitations, party favors, and, of course, the wedding invitations. I will often digitize a couple’s duogram for embroidery as well.

The bride’s married monogram should be saved for the wedding reception and everything following. Her married monogram can be used at the reception on linens, paper products, gifts, stationery, etc. These items can be used long after the wedding day in a newlywed home. Traditionally, all linens and home entertainment products will carry only the wife’s monogram. The husband’s monogram is reserved for barware. Be careful not to write any thank you notes on stationery with a married monogram until after the reception, as well!
